2. Canon Utilities

4 months ago, I bought a second-hand Canon 40D for shooting photos. I didn’t have the companion CD to install Canon Utilities, so I did some search in the Internet. It turned out, you only had to do a little trick then you had a bunch of utilities for tweaking your pictures. At the moment, I’m using following tools from Canon:

Digital Photo Professional: for editing, browsing pictures; especially important when you want to manipulate RAW photos.

EOS Utility: a very handy tool; can be used for remote shooting. I usually employ it for updating Custom Picture Styles to my camera.

PhotoStitch: if you are a fan of panorama images, it’s the right tool for you. It’s extremely simple, but powerful enough to merge fragment pictures to get a nice panorama one.

Here I mention the trick which was used to install Canon Utilities from their update packages. I use Digital Photo Professional as the example; other tools can be installed by applying the same process:

– Download Digital Photo Professional from Canon site, the website says that it’s the update package, but in reality, it’s the whole updated application.

– Right click on the *.app file, choose Show Package Contents.

– Browse to Contents -> Resources, find the file named SDI.bundle.

– Right click on SDI.bundle, go to Content folder.

– Delete Info.plist file inside Content folder.

When that Info.plist file is deleted, the package loses its update information and it becomes a ready to install application.

3. Other useful tools

Last month, I tried out some HDR pictures. I attempted to create a HDR photo from 3 pictures with different levels of exposure. I would like a simple and free tool for that purpose. Here are some utilities I had done the experiment:

– FDR Tools Basic: quite complex and powerful application, but it’s not easy to get a desirable result.

– HDRtist: a single-purpose application, actually I’m quite satisfied with its output. Therefore, I decided to keep it for playing with HDR images.

Here are my experience of playing with photos from the Canon DSLR camera on my Mac. Hope that you feel it useful and interesting as I did. Happy shooting!
