1. Make sure you are running 10.11.6 using the Combo to any version of 10.11 and Security Update 2018-004.
2. Upgrade to iTunes 12.8.2.3.

Assuming a suitable version of iTunes is in place then in Finder use the menu item Go > Go to Folder..., copy the following text, paste it into the dialog box and press enter:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/Current/Resources

Unlock your device and connect it to USB. Double click on MobileDeviceUpdater in the folder that has opened. It should notify you of a software update. Install it and iTunes should hopefully recognize your device.

On September 19, 2019, iOS 13 was released. Present requirements for iOS 13 include Mac OS 10.11.6 for iTunes 12.8 as a bare minimum.

Two factor authentication logins for AppleID unlocks was introduced on Mac OS 10.12.4. If your iOS is current for it, you can usually use it to unlock either from another current iOS device, or http://iforgot.apple.com if you don't have a Mac.

On May 29, 2019, it was found that iOS 12.1.5 could sync with iTunes on Mac OS X 10.10.5 if you kept iTunes 12.5.5.

Be very careful to backup your data properly to avoid problems. Consider a lightning port data transfer device if you need to backup data. And remember no backup is complete, unless you know you have two working copies.

Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) supports PowerPC Macs, iTunes 10.6.3, iOS 5.1.1.

Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) supports Intel only Macs, but does support PowerPC applications, iTunes 11.4 and iOS 6, and iOS 7.

Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) supports iCloud except for iCloud Drive in its current iteration and the new Notes.

Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) (link explains the pitfalls of losing PowerPC applications) supports iTunes 12.2.2.25 (available from Software update as of 10/24/2015), iOS 8 and iOS 9.0.

Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is required for iTunes 12.3 and iOS 9.2 and iOS 9.2.1(except iCloud Drive, and the new notes). Does not support iOS 10 or iTunes 12.5.1 according to the Wikipedia below.Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks)one user has said is required for iOS 10 and iTunes 12.5. It is though unable to sync with iOS 11.Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) is required minimum for the new iCloud Drive and iOS 11 (except for Notes, which requires El Capitan). iTunes 12.7.0.166 is needed for iOS 11. Also note, anyone who can install Mountain Lion can also install El Capitan, which supports all iOSes up to the iOS 14.x as of (April 2, 2021). That's covered earlier in this tip.

Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra) currently has no special requirements as of April 2, 2021, however is a free path to upgrade from Macs that shipped with Lion, that upgraded to 10.7.5 or later, and then updated to Sierra to be able to synchronize with iOS 12.

iOS 12 was released September 17, 2018. Please make sure to backup your data on your iphone, ipad, or ipod touch and not apply any update until you are certain that iTunes on your Mac or PC can handle it.

What is DeluxeFocus?

DeluxeFocus is one of many applications that supposedly improves the browsing experience and delivers various other features. In fact, it is classified as a potentially unwanted application (PUA) that feeds users with advertisements and gathers information. These applications are classified as adware. Typically, people do not download or install adware intentionally. Note that this app is designed to promote the Safe Finder website by opening it through akamaihd.net.

Adware-type applications serve coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and other advertisements. When clicked, they tend to open various dubious, potentially malicious websites. Some might execute scripts to download or install unwanted software. PUAs also collect user-system information including, for example, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of opened/visited sites, geolocations, and other browsing data. They can also target personal, sensitive information. Research shows that DeluxeFocus can access details such as passwords, telephone numbers, credit card details and other personal information. The data can be misused to make fraudulent purchases and transactions, steal various accounts, identities, etc. DeluxeFocus's developers might sell the information to third parties, potentially cyber criminals. In summary, DeluxeFocus's users risk becoming victims of identity theft, suffering monetary loss, experiencing issues relating to online privacy, browsing safety, and other problems. PUAs can never be trusted. If DeluxeFocus is installed on the browser and operating system, remove it immediately. The same applies to other apps of this type.

Examples of other adware programs include ValueKnow, UpgradeAssist and GeneralLaunch. Generally, software of this type does not deliver any value and causes serious problems. Adware developers advertise their rogue apps as legitimate and useful. To avoid potential problems, you are advised against downloading or installing adware-type programs, or any other potentially unwanted applications.

How did DeluxeFocus install on my computer?

Adware and other PUAs are usually downloaded and installed through the download/installation set-ups of other programs. I.e., when they are included into the set-ups as 'additional offers'. Developers use this distribution method to trick people into downloading and installing PUAs together with other, regular software. This method is called 'bundling'. Generally, offers to download or install unwanted apps are listed in 'Custom', 'Advanced' and other similar options, however, many users fail to check and change these settings. This allows PUAs to receive permission to be downloaded and installed together with other, regular programs. Sometimes apps of this type infiltrate through deceptive advertisements that cause unwanted downloads and installations by running certain scripts (but only when people click the ads).

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Unofficial web pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), third party downloaders, installers, and other similar channels are often monetized by using them to distribute unwanted, malicious software. Therefore, these channels should never be trusted or used. The only safe way to download software and files is via official websites and direct links. Furthermore, download and installation set-ups often contain settings such as 'Custom', 'Advanced', and 'Manual' - these mention offers to download or install additional, unwanted software. It is important to check these settings and decline offers to download or install unwanted applications before completing the process. Do not trust or click intrusive ads that appear on dubious, unofficial pages, since these can open other sites of this kind or cause unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted extensions, plug-ins and add-ons that are already installed on the browser, and programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.
